Random mix......

Today's square uses a random mix of double and treble crochets worked in rounds:
Round 1: four sets of three treble crochets each separated by two chains.
Round 2: treble crochet worked in each stitch from previous round, corners are two trebles two chains two trebles.
Round 3: trebles separated by one chain worked in alternate stitches from previous round.
Round 4: double crochet worked in each stitch from previous round.
Round 5: as round 3.
Round 6: as round 1.

Four in one.....

Today's square is made up of four smaller squares, each edged with a round of double crochets and joined with double crochets in a contrasting colour:
I think this pattern would make a cute blanket, although I would need a lot of time to do this - it wasn't the quickest square to make!!

Sunday 28 April 2013

Almost too simple......

Today I wanted to make a simple square that only used the basic treble crochet stitch:
The square starts as any traditional granny square starts - sets of 3 treble crochets separated by 2 chains - and then alternates rounds where each treble crochet was separated by a chain stitch and every other stitch from the previous round was skipped (corners had 1 treble, 2 chains, 1 treble) with a round where a treble crochet was worked in every stitch from the previous round (corners had 2 trebles, 2 chains, 2 trebles).

Circled granny square.....

I feel as though I've made an awful lot of squares so far this year, and we're still not a third of the way through. It's got to the stage where I now can't remember if I've already made certain patterns and have to check back through my previous posts to make sure!
So having checked, here is another new square that started as a circle:
The pattern for this square can be found here:

The finished purse.....

Today's piece was the front of the purse I have been working on over the past few days:
The pattern is the same as that used for the back, worked in one colour. I have also managed to put the pieces together this evening to create the finished purse:
I've finished it off with a plaited handle with a few tassels. How cute!!!

Purse flap.....

Today's piece of crochet will form the flap of the purse I started a couple of days ago:
The central part follows the same pattern as that used on 30th March, it has then been edged with two rounds of double crochets and finished off with a shell edging. I hope to get the purse finished tomorrow - I'll post a picture when it's done......

An open granny square.....

A very long day in work has meant I needed a very simple square for today, the open granny square fits the bill - easy, uncomplicated and pretty quick to make:
This involved working pairs of treble crochets separated by pairs of chains (4 chains on the corners), I have finished it with a round of double crochets to neaten the edge.

Pretty circle......

Today's 'square' is going to be the back of a pretty purse a friend found on Pinterest, there's no pattern with the pictures so I'm making it up with a spot of trial and error.....
It's a simple circle pattern, the first yellow round is alternating treble crochets and chains to give a bit of variation.

Bright hexagon....

Today I wanted to make a simple 'square' to try out my new crochet hook - a 3mm courtesy of our school's apprentice team. As an added bonus I get to be in the boardroom tomorrow to help decide who gets fired!
This pattern is a variation on a square pattern I've created before - this one has 6 sides each separated by two chains, each round has treble crochets worked in the stitch from the previous round with a treble crochet, chain, treble crochet combination in each corner.

Simple effect using chain stitch....

Today's square is a copy of a picture I found on Pinterest, but I couldn't find the pattern to go with it so I made it up as I went along - I think it turned out pretty well considering......

Pattern - in UK terminology:

  1. Chain 6, join with a slip stitch to form a loop into which round one is worked.
  2. Chain 9, * 2 treble crochets, chain 6, repeat from * 7 times, treble crochet, join in 3rd chain of original 9 chains. Join off the white yarn.
  3. Join the green yarn with a slip stitch in one of the 6 chain loops.
  4. Chain 3, 2 treble crochets, chain 2, 3 treble crochets in the same 6 chain loop as the join, * chain 6, skip one 6 chain loop, 3 treble crochets in next 6 chain loop, chain 2, 3 treble crochets in same 6 chain loop, repeat from * 3 times, join with a slip stitch.
  5. Repeat previous round working 2 treble crochets, 2 chains, 2 treble crochets in each corner and working a treble crochet in each treble crochet from the previous round.
  6. Repeat previous round, however instead of working 6 chains work 3 chains then a double crochet picking up the loop from round 1 then 3 chains - this creates the bow effect.
  7. Work a double crochet in each stitch, when you get to the 'bow' work 3 chains, in each corner work 1 double crochet, 2 chains, 1 double crochet. Join off the green yarn.
  8. Rejoin the white yarn with a slip stitch in one of the corner spaces.
  9. 3 chains, 1 treble crochet, 1 chain, 2 treble crochets, * 1 chain, 1 treble crochet, repeat from * all the way round, missing alternate double crochets from the previous round and working 2 treble crochets, 1 chain, 2 treble crochets in each corner. Finish off white yarn.

Criss cross.....

Today's square uses double treble crochet stitches to create posts and crosses in this open square:
I finished it off with a round of double crochets to make it easier to join to others.

Another variation.......

Another simple variation on a square I've already made, adding the chains in the middle of each row has created the effect of a cross:
I was particularly pleased with how the join at the end of each round has turned out.

Simple squares....

This was a very simple square to create, alternating rows of sets of three treble crochets with chains and double crochets. I struggled to get a neat finish round the edges hence the round of double crochets to finish it off:
The pattern is loosely based on one found here:

Wagon wheels.....

For today's square I have gone back to using up bits of wool I have left over from other projects, this is worked in noro silk garden lite:
http://megan.cc/MotifWheel/
I added a few extra rounds to make this the same size as most of my others squares.
I completed a round of treble crochets, a round of alternating front and back post treble crochets and finished it off with a round of double crochets.

A cool blue square......

Today's square is larger than those I would normally make, but a cool pattern none the less:
Whilst this pattern wasn't the easiest to follow (largely because I crochet left-handed and so work in a clockwise rather than anticlockwise direction!) the instructions can be found here:
http://thecreativepenny.blogspot.co.uk/2010/02/locutus.html

Chevrons......

Today's square is a test piece for a cardigan I plan to make - I just need to find some rowan cashsoft dk in black in order to do so.
It is a nice simple pattern that creates the effect I was looking for.

Pattern:
Create a foundation chain, this must be a multiple of 10 plus 2 extra stitches.
Treble crochet in the 3rd chain from the hook, work 3tc in the next 3 chains, skip 2 chains, *work 4tc in the next 4 chains, chain 2, work 4tc in the next 4 chains, skip 2 chains, repeat from * across the foundation chain, in the last chain work 2tc.
Chain 3, *work 4tc in the next 4 stitches, skip 2 chains, work 4tc in the next 4 stitches, chain 2, repeat from * across row, in the last stitch work 2tc.
NB - on each row the chain space and the skipped stitches are positioned in the same place, in each two chain space work 1tc 2chains 1tc (these are included in the sets of 4tc described above).

Wiggle it!

Using the mesh created yesterday I have added to this with some 'wiggle crochet':
This involves working four sets of treble crochets around each bar on the mesh, I have just worked squiggles around in squares but I am sure this technique could be used to create all sorts of different patterns.

Friday 12 April 2013

Mesh......

Today's square was very quick and simple to make - but I don't think it'll keep you very warm when used in a blanket as it has lots of holes:
Pattern:
Create a foundation chain.
Treble crochet in the 8th chain from the hook, *two chains, skip two chains, treble crochet in next chain, repeat to end.
Chain five, *two chains, skip two chains, treble crochet in next chain, repeat to end.
Repeat second row until mesh is square.

Post 100!!!!

Today's square is a simple grid which is then turned on the diagonal and made into a square, the original title was windowpane and I can see why:

A mitred square.....

Another variation on the basic granny square:
The pattern can be found in the link below, this is an excellent pattern - including pictures of each stage and some handy hints:

A lacy flower......

Monday's square was an open, lacy flower:

Pretty square......

Another pretty square using the leftovers from my hot water bottle cover:

Petals and leaves......

Being away camping meant there wasn't room for much in the way of yarn so this simple square made on Saturday had to use the remaining wool from the hot water bottle cover:

The pattern can be found here:

Keeping warm.....

I've just returned from 4 days camping in a very cold and snowy Peak District, and once again find myself behind with my posts. The unexpected cold necessitated an extra blanket and mini hot water bottle! So today's "square" is a cover for this mini hot water bottle made up of a number of small granny squares:
Each side is made up of 6 small squares joined together with double crochets in a contrasting colour. The neck was pretty tricky as the rounds of double crochets have been worked close to the rubber bottle, but I'm pretty happy with the outcome. I just hope future camping trips involve positive temperatures and I don't need to use it again this year!!

Simple lacework......

Today's square is a variation of the simple granny square, with basic lacework in the middle sections:
This website contains today's pattern along with a whole host of other interesting squares:

More cables.....

Today's square follows the same pattern as yesterday. I thought it would look better in different colours so tried the cables in dark blue and the rest in a pale blue:
I'm really pleased with the overall effect.

Tuesday 2 April 2013

Crocheted cable rings.....

When I saw this square I was curious how the circular cable effect was created, it was surprisingly simple - I can see me making a few more of these, maybe with contrasting colours on alternating rounds:

April already......

I can't believe it's already April - a quarter of the way through the year and my blog posts for this project. Today's square is another one found on Pinterest, this project would be a lot more difficult without this source of inspiration.....
